By the mid-’90s, Sheen was as famous for being a ladies’ man as he was for being a leading man. Known as “the Machine,” he dated porn stars, and though Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss kept the names of her clients secret, Sheen testified during her tax-evasion trial that he’d used her services. He also spent time in rehab and was hospitalized for a drug overdose. “Pray for my boy,” said his father. “He has appetites that get him into trouble.”

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, which is our body’s natural defence against illness. The virus destroys a type of white blood cell in the immune system called a T-helper cell, and makes copies of itself inside these cells. T-helper cells are also referred to as CD4 cells.
A disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and transmitted by sexual contact or by blood spread on infected needles and other implements. AIDS is not a specifically homosexual disorder. Rather it is a disease of sexually promiscuous populations that harbour large numbers of HIV. The virus attacks a particular group of white cells of the immune system (helper T lymphocytes) causing a severe reduction in the ability of the body to resist infection and certain forms of cancer. The resulting recurrent infections, often with organisms not normally causing disease (opportunistic infectors), can usually be treated, but, to date, no wholly effective treatment for the underlying HIV infection has been developed. Combinations of drugs, including protease inhibitors, reverse transcriptase inhibitors, inhibitors and DNA polymerase inhibitors, can, however, greatly prolong life and have virtually converted AIDS from an inevitably fatal, to a potentially serious chronic disease. The condition may involve many different disorders including a form of pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis carinii , CYTOMEGALOVIRUS infections, widespread herpes simplex infections, widespread thrush (CANDIDIASIS), KAPOSI’S SARCOMA and other malignancies, and brain damage from direct infection of neurons by HIV. The presence of the AIDS virus can be detected by the ELISA and other tests.
In addition to the concern for new opportunistic infections, pre-existing infections can reactivate and cause significant disease in people with AIDS. The most important example on a global scale is that of tuberculosis, as reactivated tuberculosis can cause symptomatic disease with lower levels of reactivation.
Screening of blood donors with tests for both antibody to HIV and HIV RNA has minimized risk of transmission via transfusion. Current risk of transmitting HIV via blood transfusion is probably < 1/2,000,000 per unit transfused in the US. However, in many developing countries, where blood and blood products are not screened for HIV, the risk of transfusion-transmitted HIV infection remains high. Immunodeficiency disorders are either congenital or acquired. A congenital, or primary, disorder is one you were born with. Acquired, or secondary, disorders you get later in life. Acquired disorders are more common than congenital disorders. respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) any of a genus of single-stranded paramyxoviruses; the name is derived from the type of disease produced (respiratory infection) and the microscopic appearance of the viruses in cell cultures. RSV can cause a wide variety of respiratory disorders ranging from a mild cold to serious or even fatal disease of the lung in the very young and very old. It regularly produces an outbreak of infection each winter and virtually disappears in the summer months. The most severe infections in children are in the very young, especially those who are preterm, immunologically compromised, or suffering from a congenital heart defect or preexisting lung disorder. Adults at risk for infection include parents and others who are repeatedly exposed to young children, for example, pediatric nurses and day care attendants. The course of infection tends to be milder in adults than in children and about 15 per cent of affected adults have no symptoms. In the very elderly these infections may have the same degree of seriousness and clinical manifestations as in the very young. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. HIV can be transmitted by having sex without a condom (vaginal, oral, and/or anal sex). It can also be transmitted by sharing sex toys with someone infected with HIV. Condoms should be used with every sexual act. On Wednesday evenings once a month, Sturdevant runs an H.I.V./AIDS support group in a stark conference room near the State Capitol in Jackson. The meetings end promptly at 7:30 p.m., so the dozen or so young men can race home to watch “Empire.” Sturdevant began October’s gathering with a prayer. “Hold hands and bow your heads — and take off that hat,” he said to Tommy Brown, who had rushed in from his job at Popeyes. The willowy young man snatched off his baseball cap, embroidered with the fast-food chain’s red-and-orange logo, and lowered his head. “Gracious God, we want to thank you once again for the unity that we have here, Lord,” Sturdevant intoned in his gravelly baritone. “Thank you for showing us how to love each other and love ourselves. We ask that you bring more people in that need somebody to talk to. That need the laughter. That need the understanding.” The primary causes of death from HIV/AIDS are opportunistic infections and cancer, both of which are frequently the result of the progressive failure of the immune system. Risk of cancer appears to increase once the CD4 count is below 500/μL. The rate of clinical disease progression varies widely between individuals and has been shown to be affected by a number of factors such as a person's susceptibility and immune function; their access to health care, the presence of co-infections; and the particular strain (or strains) of the virus involved. Cellular immune response to HIV. The cellular immune response is induced upon the entry of HIV into the target cells (e.g., T cells) and synthesis of viral proteins (Figure 1). MHC class I on the cell surface displays the intracellularly degraded HIV peptide fragments for recognition by T-cell receptors (TCR) on CD8+ T cells (Figure 3). CD8+ T cells lyse HIV infected cells and secrete cytokines, i.e. interferon-γ (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), and chemokines, i.e. MIP-1 α, MIP β and RANTES, that inhibit virus replication and block viral entry into CD4+ T cells. Development of CD8+ T cells is crucial for control of HIV replication. This results in declining viraemia after primary infection. In the early stages of infection, CD4+ T cells lose their proliferative capacity and therefore their contribution to viral control is minor. However, during chronic infection CD4+T cells are present and secrete interleukin-2 (IL-2) or cytokines, such as IFN-γ, to control viraemia. Despite the persistent anti-L.G.B.T. stigma and entrenched social and economic issues that cling to the South, Sturdevant feels a complicated, bone-deep tie to the people and the place. When he encourages his “sons” and “daughters” to take care of themselves and others, he is echoing the love and acceptance he received from his own large family. After years of hiding, when he came out to his mother in his 20s, she told him, “I love you regardless.” When his family eventually found out that he was sick, his mother and sister drove up to where he was living in Memphis, along with six carloads of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. They tried to serve him plates laden with down-home food that he was too ill to eat and did their best to love him back to health. In the hospital, he finally admitted to his mother he had AIDS. “She told me, ‘Boy, you gonna be all right; God got you,’ ” he recalls, tearing up. In the end, they took him home. He moved back to his mother’s house in Metcalfe, with somebody from the sprawling network of nearly 100 family members always close by, until he recovered. “They saved my life, and I’ll never forget that,” he said. The benefits of identifying those with HIV infection will be limited if necessary treatments are unavailable or not covered by appropriate insurance. Where access to HIV treatment is limited, Fellows should advocate for changes in existing policies to broaden access. There are some people who do not want people to know about condoms or clean needles. They believe that if people know about condoms and have condoms they will have more sex. They believe that if people have clean needles they will use illegal drugs more. Many of these people think this because of their religion. For example, the Catholic church does not want people to have or use condoms. They do not want people to have condoms because they do not think people should have sex unless they are married. They also think that married people should not use condoms, because they believe that if people have sex, they should be prepared to accept a possible pregnancy.
