TB, or tuberculosis, is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis that can affect anyone at any age. The bacteria usually attacks the lungs. Particular groups of individuals, however, are shown to be at a higher risk of acquiring the disease than others. These include HIV/AIDS patients, individuals in close contact with TB patients, diabetics, individuals with suppressed immune systems, foreign-born individuals in countries with high TB incidences, healthcare workers, alcoholics, and others. Symptoms of the disease include a persistent cough, fatigue, weight loss, fever, coughing blood, and sweating at night. When an infected individual coughs or sneezes, others nearby are at risk for breathing in the bacteria.
If you’re pregnant, get medical care right away. If you’re HIV-positive, you may pass the infection to your baby. But if you receive treatment during pregnancy, you can cut your baby’s risk significantly.

There some people who do not want people to know about condoms or clean needles. They believe that if people know about condoms and have condoms they will have more sex. They believe that if people have clean needles they will use illegal drugs more. Many of these people think this because of their religion. For example, the Catholic church does not want people to have or use condoms. They do not want people to have condoms because they do not think people should have sex unless they are married. They also think that married people should not use condoms, because they believe that if people have sex, they should be prepared to accept a possible pregnancy.

There are complete copies of HIV genetic material among the strands of mRNAs produced by the cell. These gather together with newly made HIV proteins and enzymes to form new viral particles, which are then released from the cell. The enzyme protease plays a vitla role at this stage of HIV’s life cycle by cutting down long strands of protein into smaller pieces, which are used to construct mature viral cores.

Because human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is incurable, preventing HIV transmission is paramount. Exposure to HIV can occur by percutaneous, mucous membrane or non-intact skin exposure to infected blood or body fluids. It can also occur by sexual contact, trauma or needle sharing. Postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is one method of preventing HIV transmission. PEP is the provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART) to HIV-negative persons exposed to infected materials. It should be emphasized that PEP should not replace standard infection control measures and behavioral practices that best prevent HIV exposure.
The two Tat proteins (p16 and p14) are transcriptional transactivators for the LTR promoter acting by binding the TAR RNA element. The TAR may also be processed into microRNAs that regulate the apoptosis genes ERCC1 and IER3. The Rev protein (p19) is involved in shuttling RNAs from the nucleus and the cytoplasm by binding to the RRE RNA element. The Vif protein (p23) prevents the action of APOBEC3G (a cellular protein that deaminates Cytidine to Uridine in the single stranded viral DNA and/or interferes with reverse transcription). The Vpr protein (p14) arrests cell division at G2/M. The Nef protein (p27) down-regulates CD4 (the major viral receptor), as well as the MHC class I and class II molecules.
Because of licensing and public-health inspection, it is unlikely to get HIV by getting a tattoo in a commercial shop. However, it is possible to get HIV from a reused or not properly sterilized tattoo or piercing needle or other equipment, or from contaminated ink. So it’s important to know that your tattoo artist is licensed, working in a licensed and inspected facility, and posts information about their equipment sterility and procedures.
Protease inhibitors (PIs) interrupt virus replication at a later step in the HIV life cycle, preventing cells from producing new viruses. Currently, these include ritonavir (Norvir), darunavir (Prezista), and atazanavir (Reyataz). Using PIs with NRTIs reduces the chances that the virus will become resistant to medications. Atazanavir and darunavir are available in combination with cobicistat as atazanavir/cobicistat (Evotaz) and darunavir/cobicistat (Prezcobix). Cobicistat and ritonavir inhibit the breakdown of other drugs, so they are used as boosters to reduce the number of pills needed.
You might not know if you get infected by HIV. Some people get fever, headache, sore muscles and joints, stomach ache, swollen lymph glands, or a skin rash for one or two weeks. Most people think it’s the flu. Some people have no symptoms. Fact Sheet 103 has more information on the early stage of HIV infection.
HIV is a retrovirus. That is, it stores its genetic information as ribonucleic acid (RNA). Once inside a CD4+ lymphocyte, the virus uses an enzyme called reverse transcriptase to make a copy of its RNA, but the copy is made as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). HIV mutates easily at this point because reverse transcriptase is prone to making errors during the conversion of HIV RNA to DNA. These mutations make HIV more difficult to control because the many mutations increase the chance of producing HIV that can resist attacks by the person’s immune system and/or antiretroviral drugs.
